Tobias Brunner, CTO of VSHN, sat down with Raphaël Pinson of Isovalent to discuss why they decided to change their CNI to Cilium in OpenShift. Yeah, that's a good question. Of course we are using Cilium, that's why I'm here, but not exclusively. We had our fair share of different network plugins with OpenShift, and over the years we learned the pros and cons of the different network plugins. When we started with OpenShift 4, we always chose the default one, but after some time and some experimentation we figured out that it's actually much better, mainly in terms of performance, but also in terms of security. We work in a highly secure environment. We have Swiss banks, insurance companies, but also global companies asking for added security that OpenShift cannot provide out of the box with its standard network plugins. We did a discovery of what's out there in the market, and when we figured out that Cilium is actually capable of doing much more than just a little bit of networking, let's call it like that, we were sold. We did some experiments with it, and once we learned that it actually is officially supported in OpenShift, that's also important for us. We need to stay on what Red Hat says that we are allowed to do with OpenShift to be compliant. Then we were all set for choosing Cilium.
