It provides, on one layer, observability into what applications are doing and what systems are doing, with security-relevant observability data. Then, on top of that, it can do threat mitigation. So it can also enforce security policies and, for example, prevent applications from accessing sensitive files, prevent access to malicious network endpoints, or detect and mitigate intrusion into the system.
