In the run-up to Cilium's 1.14 release, CTO and Cofounder of Isovalent, Thomas Graf, took some time to reflect on how community input has been a vital contributing factor to the improvement of Cilium Mesh. Yeah, there is a lot to that. We have learned over the years from users. Starting out with just connectivity is not enough. We need observability. Providing connectivity in a cluster is not enough either, so we need Cluster Mesh to connect multiple clusters together, whether you want to scale out or separate stateful clusters from stateless ones. We also learned that sidecar-based service meshes are not ideal, and that led to Cilium Service Mesh and the sidecar-free model. Then we learned that connecting legacy VM environments with Kubernetes is a big challenge, so we built Cilium Mesh with Transit Gateway. We're constantly learning from users and customers as they progress on their cloud-native journey.
