Life of a Packet in Kubernetes: A Network Engineer’s Guide
Virtual
10AM SGT & AWST | 12PM AEST | 1PM AEDT | 3PM NZDT
About this session
Kubernetes networking can feel complex. Traffic no longer flows simply through switches and routers; it moves through services, overlays, proxies, and routing layers tied to Kubernetes abstractions.
In this session, we trace a single packet through a cluster using Isovalent Cilium, showing you how it:
- Enters the cluster and moves across nodes
- Traverses VXLAN or Geneve overlays
- Interacts with services and the Gateway API
- Exits through egress and BGP routing
Each step links back to familiar concepts like IP addressing, encapsulation, and forwarding. Live demos with Hubble, the Cilium CLI, and Wireshark show real traffic in action, helping you build a clear mental model of Kubernetes networking.
Designed for network engineers, platform teams, and SREs who want to understand and reason about Kubernetes traffic flows.
Can’t make it to the session? Register anyway and we’ll send you the recording!
Curious what really happens to a packet inside Kubernetes? In this session, we’ll follow traffic step by step through services, overlays, routing, and egress, explained in familiar networking terms.

Kubernetes Networking and Cilium
Kubernetes networking is difficult, even for experienced network architects. In this new eBook offered by Isovalent, you will learn about Kubernetes Networking and Cilium. Explained in terms and references network engineers will understand, the eBook will still be accessible to anyone keen to learn about Kubernetes networking and the de facto cloud-native networking platform: Cilium.
Cilium: Up and Running
Cilium is now considered the de facto cloud native networking platform for Kubernetes, connecting, securing, and monitoring millions of applications across thousands of clusters. With such versatility and feature-richness, Cilium can be daunting to learn. This comprehensive guide breaks Cilium down, making it broadly accessible to the increasing number of users who’ll encounter the platform in their careers.
