We're excited to announce the release of Buzzing Beyond Clouds: The Illustrated Children's Guide to Cilium, the follow up to Buzzing Across Space: The Illustrated Children's Guide to eBPF. This second illustrated book brings the Cilium story to life in a way that can be digested by readers of all ages and levels of technical expertise. Buzzing Across Space introduced Obee and showed how eBPF makes the Linux kernel programmable by proving that even the smallest eBees have a role to play. Buzzing Beyond Clouds picks up where that story left off. Obee is now a Jedi bee, travelling the Kubulous galaxy in his Hex-Wing with loyal astrodroid L4LB. Obee is putting those eBPF-powered skills to work connecting planets, building observability systems, and defending communities against pirates. Each chapter of the adventure maps to a layer of what Cilium actually does: Networking and CNI: Obee arrives on Netwaark and sets about fixing how the Netwees connect with each other, mapping directly to how Cilium began as a Layer 3 CNI implementation and replaced iptables. Cluster Mesh: Trade expands beyond a single planet to the whole Kubulous system, just as Cluster Mesh extends Cilium's capabilities across multiple clusters for high availability, failover, and shared services. Observability with Hubble: On Aubservv, Obee deploys a satellite observation network to track the Flakens, echoing Hubble's role in surfacing flow logs, service maps, and Prometheus metrics so engineers can actually see what's going on in their clusters. Network Policy and Encryption: When Java the Hutt's pirates come for the Netwees' ice cream (and their data), Obee responds with control gates, energy shields, and encryption protocols. Service Mesh: Bad actors are using the trade routes for energy extraction, which calls for HTTP routing, retries, and circuit breaking, just as Cilium handles application networking through Gateway API and Envoy. Tetragon and Runtime Security: In the final battle, Tetragon Bee arrives to help fight the ultimate threat to the Kubulous galaxy. Buzzing Beyond Clouds was written by Quentin Monnet and Bill Mulligan, illustrated by Dacil C. and Vadim Shchekoldin, and reviewed by Liz Rice and Joe Stringer. The project was supported by CNCF, Hedgehog, and Isovalent. Physical copies of the book made their debut at KubeCon + CloudNativeCon Europe in Amsterdam, where Bill Mulligan signed copies during both CiliumCon and the main conference. Whether you're already deep in the Cilium ecosystem or just getting started, this book is for everyone. Buckle up, and may the Force be with you!
